Donald Trump has caused further outrage by claiming more British Muslims join Islamic State than the Armed Forces, as a petition demanding he is banned from the UK hit 500,000 signatures.
The 69-year-old US Republican presidential candidate tweeted a link to a magazine article last night that referenced the claim, which was based on figures from England’s first Muslim MP.
Khalid Mahmood, the Labour MP for Birmingham Perry Barr, said in August 2014 that there were about 2,000 British jihadis – a higher number than the Government’s estimate.
And this figure was then compared to Ministry of Defence data showing there were about 600 British Muslims in the Armed Forces at the time – just 0.4 per cent of total personnel.
Mr Trump today tweeted a link to an article on Monday in American conservative magazine the
National Review that mentioned this comparison, which featured on MailOnline last year.
But his critics were fast to reply, accusing him of being ‘racist’, ‘grotesque’ and even ‘more disgusting than Hitler’. However other commenters said he was ‘right’ and called the feature a ‘scary article’.
Separately, it has been revealed the UK Government petition calling for Mr Trump to be banned from Britain for ‘hate speech’ is the most popular ever, signed by more than 500,000 people.
In a series of outbursts, the billionaire tycoon said ‘UK politicians should be thanking me’ for his claim that some of the country’s Muslim communities are no-go areas because of extremism.
