Carol tops the Golden Globes 2016 nominations with five nods… as leading love interests Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara go head-to-head for Best Actress

With five Golden Globes nominations, Carol is expected to have the biggest success in 2016.But the 73rd awards ceremony, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles next January, is expected to see its two leading ladies battle it out after Thursday’s list of nominees revealed a very rare awards season surprise.Co-stars – and on-screen lovers – Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara will go head-to-head for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, alongside Brie Larson, Saoirse Ronan and Alicia Vikander.

Carol also received nods for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Original Score and Best Director – Motion Picture when the list of accolades was read out at the same host venue on Thursday.With a possible personal win to boot, director Todd Haynes is no doubt delighted after hearing hosts Angela Bassett, America Ferrera, Chloë Grace Moretz and Dennis Quaid mention Carol five times.

Nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama, Leonardo will be pitted against last year’s winner Eddie, as well as Michael Fassbender, Bryan Cranston and Will Smith.The Golden Globes are regarded as the second most prestigious awards ceremony for American film, just behind the Academy Awards.Leonardo previously won Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical in 2013 for The Wolf of -Wall Street.And he also walked away with Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for The Aviator in 2004.Though the Titanic star, whose 1997 co-star Kate Winslet was similarly given a nod on Thursday, has missed out on the prestigious Academy Awards five times.
